Add personality to your Facebook profile

Facebook wallpapers that can be used on the social networking site don't actually exist, though many websites will try to get you to purchase them or download their software. While there are still many ways you can customize your Facebook profile, using wallpapers is currently not an option.

What Are Wallpapers?

Wallpapers, digitally speaking, are backgrounds that can be used to make a website, blog, or profile page more colorful and interesting. Like physical wallpaper you would use in your home, they come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, and can be customized with photos, logos, or tiles.

Social networking sites like MySpace and Twitter make liberal use of wallpapers, and users are able to make their own profile pages unique. Unfortunately for many, Facebook wallpapers are yet to make an appearance, so every member's profile page is basically the same.

Searching for Facebook Wallpapers

If you do a quick web search for "Facebook wallpapers," you'll find lots of results. Clicking around on some of the links, however, will turn up some dubious sites and misleading headlines. Some of these so-called wallpapers are actually just single photos that you can add to your page using the creator's program. A few of these are legit, but the fact that they need to hook you by promising wallpapers and delivering only small images is suspect.

A few sites offering wallpaper and Facebook layouts go even further, asking you to download a program so that you can design and upload your customized wallpaper to your profile. If any of these actually do work, you'd have to allow the programs to hack into your Facebook account to get the wallpaper posted. This is, of course, forbidden by Facebook, and you risk having your account shut down. There's also a huge risk of infecting your computer with viruses and spyware.

Other Options for Facebook Wallpapers

Since you can't actually change your profile background on Facebook, you may want to look into other ways to modify how it displays. Here are some suggestions that you can try.

Page Rage

Page Rage is an interesting idea. You upload and install their plugin to your computer, and then choose the wallpaper design that you like from their available patterns. The program you've installed then seems to add that background to your Facebook page.

What's really happening, though, is that only you can see this new background. Page Rage has added an image layer to your browser, so that, when you go to Facebook, you see the new wallpaper. No one else can see it, but if you just want it to look different for your own personal use, this is the best option.

Mint Profile

Mint Profile has lots of different options for you to add some new elements to your Facebook page. You can create big, glittery text, clocks, lava lamps, banners, and all kinds of other decorative effects. There's also a wide selection of graphics for you to choose from. The most refreshing aspect of this site is that it doesn't mislead users - it is very clear that they are following what is allowed by Facebook and testing all of their add-ons before offering them to you.

Facebook's Standard Profile Pages

Facebook offers an alternative to the often overbearing and overdone pages on sites like MySpace. You aren't assaulted by loud music files and blinking graphics when you click on a profile page. Instead, you know how to navigate and find what you're looking for because each page is laid out the same as your own. Though you can't give your profile a complete overhaul including Facebook wallpapers, you can still play around with different facebook applications to give your profile a little extra oomph.
